Jao Camp Description
Jao Camp is a sophisticated luxury camp in the heart of the Okavango Delta, surrounded by riverine forests and vast floodplains. The lodge is an intimate camp set out under a canopy of trees. Each of the nine tents are beautifully designed and spacious. Each tent has expansive views from private decks, en-suite facilities, an outside shower, mosquito nets, ceiling fans and tea and coffee making facilities.
There are two plunge pools in the camp, a dining area and central lounge. A boma caters for al fresco dining under the stars. Jao camp also has a spa providing a range of massage therapies and a gym for the active guests!
Jao Camp Game Viewing and Wildlife Activities
Jao Camp offers fantastic game viewing year round. During an unusually high flood season, game drives begin by boating out to a nearby Hunda Island where the vehicles are waiting, and the drive begins from there. Huge herds of red lechwe can be seen, followed by their primary predator – prides of lion. Other game, typical of Botswana includes elephant, buffalo, leopard, tsessebe, zebra and wildebeest, hippo and crocodile. Many bird species are resident such as Meyer’s Parrot, African Harrier Hawk, Black egret, Coppery-tailed Coucal, Malachite Kingfisher, Hamerkop and Black Crake being some of the avian treasures found at Jao Camp.
Jao Camp offers guests a combination of land as well as water activities, 30% Game Drives and 70% Water Activities, dependant on flood levels and time of year. During the summer months, activities focus more on game drives and during the winter months Jao mainly offers water activities. Game drives are offered in open 4×4 Land Rovers. Full day game drives and picnics on Hunda Island are available, a 45 minute boat ride away from Jao Camp. Night drives with spotlights are a highlight. Guided nature walks are available as well as water game viewing in glass-bottomed mokoros (dug-out canoes). Fishing is available on a catch and release basis. A raised hide located about 20 minutes from camp is available for the more adventurous guest which can also be used for sleep-outs.
