Camp Description


Nestled on a lush palm island in the heart of the northern Okavango Delta, Shinde is an intimate camp located on the edge of Shinde lagoon, teeming with animal and birdlife. The main camp's unique tree house made of a multi-tiered raised dining/lounge area under canvas, set amongst the shade of ebony and mangosteen, complements the atmosphere of this original safari camp.

Game Viewing


Shinde Island has grassy plains, patches of forest and attractive palm groves, while Shinde Camp looks out over a permanent lagoon and fast flowing channels.


Game viewing from a mokoro (local canoe) is the most tranquil way to experience the Okavango. Shinde species count is 450 for birds and 75 for mammals. Game typically seen at Shinde are Baboon, Buffalo, Crocodile, Elephant, Lion, Lechwe and many other antelopes.


From October to March the waters subside and extensive green open plains are the highlight. This is where the game viewing is the most diverse. Lion, Cheetah and Leopard are plentiful, while Tsessebe, Red Lechwe, Zebra, Giraffe, Warthog and Wildebeest dot the flood plains.


Wildlife Activities


  • An excellent location in the Okavango Delta with permanent water for year round water activities as well as large dry areas for game drive routes.
  • This combination provides the habitat for a wide variety of wildlife found consistently in the area.
  • Included in the wide variety of game found at Shinde, there are regular sightings of the rarely spotted sitatunga antelope.
  • Fly or spin fishing throughout the year (best months May - November).

How to Get there


ExpertBotswana can arrange flights to Botswana from Johannesburg or Cape Town into Maun or Kasane, where most safaris start and end. Transfers from Maun/Kasane are done by light aircraft into the camps Inter-camp transfers are done by light aircraft, road, boat or mekoro.

Child Policy


Children of 10 years and older are accepted at Shinde.


Electricity


  • At Shinde electricity is generated to allow the operation of lighting and other basic facilities in camp.
  • Re-charging of camera/video batteries is possible, arranged by the camp managers, provided guests bring the appropriate adaptors along to suit Botswana 220V power source.
  • An international multi adaptor is recommended.
  • The electricity system does not support the use of hair dryers.


Malaria


Malaria is found in the central, western and northern areas of Botswana.
